Click here for Landfill Information The Graham County Landfill is the hottest topic in the Gila Valley. It’s hot because users of the landfill have to pay. No one wants or likes to pay for anything- especially just for trash. The landfill still serves all of Graham County, is located on City of Safford property and is operated by Gila Resources. How did this happen? As Graham County operated the landfill for years, certain compliance laws enforced by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality began to be broken. Complete coverage of the trash each day, testing of ground water directly under the landfill are examples of noncompliance to State laws that could have cost the County- or us, its citizens- up to $5000 per day. One of the answers to achieving compliance to laws and answering the demands of citizens needs, an outside contractor was explored. Bids were received from legally qualifying parties. The winner of the low bid was a company from New Mexico who had bid a cost of $44 per ton of disposal. While this was a reasonable cost, our community governments felt that another avenue might serve the citizens of Graham County even better. Gila Resources was the only local company that could legally and professionally meet the challenge. By using the most sensible and reasonable approaches possible, Gila Resources has saved 20% of the cost of operating the land fill. Gila Resources has years of professional experience working with ADEQ on environmental compliance and has already made significant strides in meeting the landfill compliance demands. Rules have been implemented to improve the areas sanitation such as covered loads, controlling the dumping area so it can be covered nightly, and increased labor force to pick up stray trash. Gila Resources is a part of the Gila Valley community and would have been negligent in our duty to serve had we not taken on this challenge. We have been maligned by some, and thanked by many.
